“I got yo back!” This is a phrase that the young people who attended Resurrection now frequently say. The expression comes from guest speaker, Reggie Dabbs, who delivered the message to the youth. During the weekend of January 13-15 inGatlinburg, 20 junior high students from Chapel Hill and 9 chaperones, attended the retreat. Basically, the weekend is like a revival for young people. The Holston Conference sponsors the annual event with more than 5,000 attendees.
Throughout the weekend, the students heard the gospel preached in a language designed especially for them. Students were able to relate to the Biblical stories that came to life through story-telling, skits, black light productions, and music. Contemporary bands that performed include: Wayne Kerr Band and Leeland.
When asked to describe their experience, the students (ages 12-15), said they LOVED IT. Each night after attending sessions at the convention center, the chaperones & students went back to the cabin and had devotional. This time together allowed for reflection and discussion. It was a privilege to have students openly share how the message spoke to them and how they related to it in their daily lives at home & school.
Featured presenter for the weekend was Mr. Reggie Dabbs. His message to students was, “You can’t change your past, but you can change your future.” Our kids learned that sin (the snake) will grow and consume you. Saturday the message was no matter our sin that ONLY God’s love & grace can cover it. On Sunday, everyone participated in Holy Communion.
Though lots of fun was had and many laughs were shared, this experience was not taken lightly. Children gave their lives to the Lord. Several said they had “chill bumps” and could feel the Holy Spirit moving. Many were moved to tears at various points in the session.
Thank you so much to the support of parents and church members for encouraging our young people to grow in the Lord. What a powerful occasion when children freely listen and open up. It is our responsibility to give them all the information & encouragement they need to be strong Christians during their challenging teenage years.
