PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

Spring is always a wonderful time of the year, especially here in the Sequatchie Valley. Everything seems so fresh and new. It’s awesome what God can do. We should thank Him every day for His creation and never take it for granted.

May promises to be a month with lots going on to keep us busy. We will celebrate Mother’s Day on May 12, and Decoration Sunday the next week on Sunday, May 19. Both are very important to us and have great meaning to all of us. Let’s not forget the last Sunday, May 26 is Memorial Day. This national holiday is a time to reflect and remember the sacrifice of many men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. All three of these special days help us to appreciate those who have played such an important role in our lives. All three give us good reason to give thanks and praise to God for those who have helped to make us the person we are today.

In our remembering, let us be sure to express our gratitude and love to God for the one who truly did the most to make us who we are today, Jesus. As important as all three of those other events are, they all fall short of what Jesus has done for us. He gives us the greatest reason to celebrate everything else in life.

MAY MISSIONS FEATURED PROJECT-”HANDS ON MISSION PROJECT”

Our mission project for May will be to pack 25 food buckets for Zimbabwe. Dawn Jones will be contacting each Sunday school class with a specific request to supply one or two items for each bucket. For example a class may be asked to supply 25 – 48 oz. bottles of cooking oil and 25- 9 oz. boxes of powdered milk. Those who are not in a Sunday school class and would like to help may contribute to the shipping cost which is $5.00 a bucket (that money can be given to Dawn or Jane). A volunteer will be needed to deliver the buckets on June 7^th to a pick up location in Chattanooga. Please watch the weekly bulletin for updates on this project. The mission committee thanks you in advance for all your generosity and help.

The Food Buckets contents are to include: 1-5 lb. bag of corn meal, 1-5 lb. bag of sugar, 1-5 lb. bag of self-rising flour, 1-2 lb. bag of rice, 1- 2 lb. bag of dried beans, 1- 2 lb. (or 2-1 lb.) canned ham(s),

1 box of powdered milk (9 oz. or less), 1 bottle cooking oil (48 oz. or less) and 1 small box of Splenda.

Pack all items in a NEW 5-gallon bucket with lid. (the buckets have been provided)

A $5.00 donation for packing and shipping is to accompany each kit—

do not put money in the container!

The local church should write one (1) check for total kits to their district office

(EX: 10 kits x $5 = $50).

Kits will be picked up at a designated district location on June 7, 2013.

This is not an UMCOR kit.

Hey there!

It’s hard to believe that we have finished 1/3 of 2013 already! This month we will host our first Blood Assurance blood drive on Wednesday, May 22. We need 30 people to commit to donating blood. Will you please step up and give the gift of life? We will honor our graduating seniors from high school and college this month. The campaign for “No More Malaria” is continuing through May. Just $10 will save lives of children from contracting malaria in Africa. Please consider giving to this effort. Our goal is 400 nets. Please check the missions board for more info.

On Sunday, March 31, Jeremy Bradford was honored as April’s Servant of the Month during our morning worship service. Jeremy is a member of the Building sub-committee which is in charge of gathering information on purchasing equipment to hold our worship services at our new Family Life Center. Thank you Jeremy for all you do for Chapel Hill and for God.

BLOOD DRIVE
Wednesday, May 22 Chapel Hill will host their first blood drive of 2013. We need at least 30 people to commit to donate please, or they will have to shorten our drive. The blood mobile will be in the church parking lot from 3:30 until 8 PM to receive your “gift of life”. Please come out and donate. A $25 gift card will be given away at our blood drive along with the chance to win the Blood Assurance monthly promotional give-away of a Wii U prize package. First time donors must bring a photo ID.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Have you signed up to volunteer to help out with Vacation Bible School this summer? If not, why not? We need everybody’s participation. ”Be a Somebody” to a child that comes to VBS this year by introducing them to Jesus! Please contact Program Director Mindie Bach at (423)653-5457.

EMILY ANDERSON
The Lord gave Emily Michelle to Billy & Pam Anderson, to love and to cherish, in the early hours of August 12, 1994. She has blessed our home with love, laughter, her beautiful smile, and caring heart.

Emily has a love for all animals, big and small. She enjoys trail riding on her horse Apache’, that is also full of cans and kittens. She has played high school soccer for the past two years. She is an amateur photographer. She enjoys all types of music, and can still play a tune or two on the piano after many years of lessons. As a child, Emily was rarely seen without her “Pooh” doll and several stuffed kitties. She loved blowing bubbles and playing with her twin dolls that she named “Hannah” and “Grace”. As she grew, she tried out many sports, such as basketball, soccer, gymnastics, and dance. Dance became her new love. She took lessons in ballet, jazz, hip-hop and modern dance for a little over three years. She can be found dancing in her room on a daily basis, even now. Emily has a deep and caring heart. She shows this daily by the care and concern she has for all those around her. Emily has been peer tutoring at Griffith Elementary this year in one of the pre-kindergarten classes and has discovered a love for children and enjoys helping them. Emily plans to attend Chattanooga State this fall to pursue a career in teaching.

AUSTIN BAIRD
Austin will be attending UTC in the fall, pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering. He also plans to get his teaching certification. Right now, he thinks he wants to be a computer teacher and wants to return to Sequatchie County to teach in our school system. Austin attends our Wednesday night youth group.

It’s May which means graduation time. We would like to honor all our graduating seniors this month, whether they are graduating from high school or college.

HORACE GAITHER BARKER
Plans to attend Vanderbilt University and major in financial economics/business. He hopes to obtain his MBA upon graduating from Vanderbilt. He would then like to go to law school. He will be playing football at Vanderbilt as well. He is a recruited walk-on as a long snapper. Gaither is the Valedictorian and made 31 on his ACT. He was captain of the football team this year.

KATHERINE BARKER
Katherine Ann Barker is the daughter of Allen C. Barker and Anita Myers Barker. She is graduating from Tennessee Technological University with an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Medical Sciences. She lettered in Tennessee Tech Women’s Basketball team all four years, where she received Defensive Player of the year, Miss Golden Eagle, and the Ohio Valley Conference Medal of Honor. She is president of the Phi Epsilon Kappa fraternity at Tennessee Tech and is involved in various other clubs such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Exercise Science Club.
Afterwards, her plans are to attend Marshall University to receive her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Everyone is more than welcome to attend the graduation ceremony held on May 11, 2013 at 2 p.m. cst. In her free time, she enjoys shopping, spending time with friends and family, and doing anything active outdoors.

Meghan graduated from Bryan College in Dec. 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Theater and a minor in Business Administration. She is currently working at a small insurance agency and planning her wedding to William Tholken.

WILLIAM THOLKEN
William will graduate from Bryan College this May with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus in Management. He is looking for work in a management position, but is open for other positions. He is looking forward to his wedding to Meghan Jones this fall.

Administrative Board Meeting
April 14, 2013

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, April 14 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Betty Austin, Janis Spangler, Greg Tholken, Becky Tholken, Jeff Jones, Rev. Tom Tucker, Annette Brown, Sharon Cordell, Glenn Barker, Keith Davis, Mark Allen, Christa Bradford, Jeremy Bradford, Ethel Powell & Paul Powell

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker who also opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board meeting minutes of March 10 were reviewed by board members. Greg Tholken made a motion to accept minutes as written, with a second by Bro. Tom Tucker, followed by a unanimous vote.

The financial reports for March were distributed and reviewed by board members, General fund displayed total inflows of $14,086.81 and total outflows of $14,484.13 which brought the net total for March to ($397.32), with a total balance of $69,361.44. Building Fund report was reviewed, which displayed better figures of total inflows of $1,333,543.33 and total outflows of $1,320,313.48 resulting in a net total of $13,229.85. Becky Tholken made a motion to accept financial report, followed by a second by Greg Tholken; a unanimous vote followed.

Paul Powell for Trustees-still seeking bids for insurance quotes on both properties, will need to make a decision in 2 weeks. Bro. Tucker mentioned that he has a friend in the insurance business that he will contact to obtain a bid.

Annette Brown for Work Area Committee- The Work Area Committee chairpersons breakfast meeting originally scheduled for Sat., April 13 has been rescheduled for a dinner meeting on Thursday, May 9 at 6 pm.

Bro. Tucker for Missions- In May we will collect food for the buckets to be shipped to Zimbabwe.

Bro. Tucker for Worship- Youth will conduct the entire Morning worship service on Sunday, April 21.

Recommendation to maintain $50K in building fund account

A recommendation was made to remove DSL at the Family Life Center until offices are moved.

We cannot claim tax exemption on our property taxes for the FLC until we start holding worship services there, at that time we will need to submit a Sunday bulletin from our first service there in order to qualify.

UMM- a 16′ x 30′ storage building has been ordered to store the BBQ equipment to be placed near the pavilion. Plans have been made to hold the 2013 annual BBQ at the new property.

Family Life

Center Progress

We are blessed to report that we have held a Service of Consecration at the Family Life Center! This service took place on Palm Sunday, one year following our Ground Breaking Ceremony that also took place on Palm Sunday. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Mike Hubble was present at both ceremonies. He also gave the morning message on both occasions. We are currently gathering information and prices on equipment to purchase in order to start holding worship services in the facility. Please do not stop your giving to this project.

We will begin to hold our Wednesday night Bible Study and youth programs in our Family Life Center soon. Please stay tuned for more information on this.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

At last spring is here and everything is beginning to come alive! Spring always reminds me of the life God provides. It’s new, fresh, and beautiful. God is so good and each season of the year seems to be a reminder of that fact. I so look forward to warm weather and longer days outside.

Beginning the second Sunday in April, I will be starting a series of sermons on the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit. I have had more than one person show interest in learning about how the Holy Spirit impacts our lives and how He relates to our world as God, the third person of the Trinity. I will spend five Sundays on the Holy Spirit with the final sermon delivered on Pentecost. I believe the more we realize how important the work of the Holy Spirit is the closer we will be to God and the stronger our witness will become. We have scheduled one Sunday in April, when I will not be preaching on the Holy Spirit and that is April 21. On that Sunday, our youth will conduct the entire service. They will collect the offering, provide the music and deliver the message. I am really looking forward to that service as I am sure you are. It should be a wonderful time of worship. As pastor, I am very proud of our youth and the love they have for Jesus and one another.

Let us continue to pray for each other and the ministry God has given us here at Chapel Hill.

APRIL MISSIONS FEATURED PROJECT-SEQUATCHIE VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE

This local organization began in the hearts of Pastor Tom Tucker and Dr. Hiltrud Thurmann to provide health care to individuals of Sequatchie County who currently find themselves without any medical insurance. The process began in 2010 when Pastor Tom & Dr. Thurmann shared their vision of opening a free medical clinic in Dunlap. Becky Tholken who had volunteered in a free clinic in Florida before relocating with her family to Dunlap, was eager to climb “on-board”. After a year of planning, establishing a corporation, applying and qualifying for 501 (c)3 status, Sequatchie Volunteers in Medicine (SVIM) opened their doors on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012. They currently have about 27 active patients, 5 volunteer nurses, and 2 volunteer physicians, and about 6 other volunteers that serve monthly. They hold their clinic at the Dunlap Medical Center once a month on a designated Sunday afternoon from 1-4 pm. Patients need to be pre-qualified by attending an eligibility screening prior to obtaining an appointment. In order to qualify for SVIM, individuals must meet the income guidelines and not have any type of medical insurance.

Spring greetings!

We just celebrated the most wonderful event in history…the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of the Jesus’ love and sacrifice, He made it possible for us to be with Him throughout eternity. Easter is the perfect reflection of how God feels about us. When we look at the cross, we see that God loves us enough to die to have a relationship with us. That tells us how much God values each one of us. When we look at the empty tomb, we see that no matter what happens, God has the power to see us through anything-even death. Knowing this, we can face life with trust. Jesus came to show us God and to reflect God’s love for us. (See John 14:8-9) Easter invites us to see ourselves worthy of redemption, loved beyond measure, and created for eternal life! (Excerpt from The Upper Room, April 1, 2013)

Chris sings in the choir and with our contemporary group and also plays his guitar with our guitar and strings ensemble. Thanks Chris for sharing your talents with your church family.

Congratulations to William Tholken & Meghan Jones on their recent engagement. William is the son of Greg and Becky Tholken and the grandson of Jerry & Connie Beatty and George & Sue Tholken, all of Sarasota, FL. Meghan is the daughter of Greg & Pam Jones of Hixson, TN. An October 19 wedding is being planned in Hixson at Abba’s House. William and Meghan will be graduating from Bryan College in Dayton, TN on May 11.

God in Shoes is a special spa day for ladies in our community, with a special focus on those with challenges in their lives. It will be a day to pamper, refresh and renew them and show them, in a practical way God’s love. There will be haircuts, hand, neck and shoulder massage, facials and manicures. Child care is available with a luncheon from 12:00 to 2:00. We are collecting new shoes in boxes to give out. If you would like to participate and buy a pair of shoes for this event, please put them on the table in the basement or give them to Peggy or Sharon. This will be on Sunday, May 5 from 10:00 – 4:00 at the National Guard Armory.

The bloodmobile will be in the church parking lot from 3:30 until 8 PM to receive your “gift of life”. Please come out and donate. Soon, we will be gearing up for Vacation Bible School 2013. This year, we will be experiencing Kingdom Rock- “Where Kids Stand Strong for God”. Once again, we will need plenty of volunteers, so please keep June 17-21 open.

Servant of the Month

It’s our great pleasure to announce our April 2013 “Servant of the Month”, Jeremy Bradford. You can find Jeremy in many areas around Chapel Hill. He has been very instrumental in the building of our new Family Life Center up on “the hill”, he takes his turn presenting the children’s sermon during the Sunday Morning worship service and also with his wife Christa, volunteer to teach children’s church. He helps out with building stage props for the Christmas play the children perform every year, as well as many other “behind the scenes” projects around the church. Jeremy and Christa are members of Mrs. Ethel’s Sunday school class. They have two wonderful children, Emma and Carter. Thank you Jeremy for serving God and your Chapel Hill family

Administrative Board Meeting
March 10, 2013

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, March 10 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Glenn Barker, Harold & Marcia Bibb, Annette Brown, Paul & Ethel Powell, Rev. Tom Tucker, Janis Spangler, Greg & Becky Tholken

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker, Bro. Tom opened the meeting with prayer.

The Board meeting minutes of February 17 were reviewed by board members. Greg Tholken made a motion to accept minutes as written.

The financial reports for February were reviewed by board members, General fund displayed total inflows of $14,287.72 and total outflows of $16,667.31 which brought the net total for February to ($2,379.59), with a total balance of $69,758.76. Building Fund report was reviewed, which displayed better figures of total inflows of $1,324,610.33 and total outflows of $1,315,448.35 resulting in a net total of $9,161.98 All payments will start to be drawn from the general fund account for the Family Life Center (FLC) paid by general fund treasurer Sharon Cordell, except for interest. Rev. Tom Tucker made a motion to accept financial report, followed by a second by Greg Tholken; a unanimous vote followed.

Annette Brown for Work Area Committee- Chairpersons will meet on Saturday, April 13 at 8 AM

Sunday school fund-$11,735, Bro. Tucker mentioned to the board a request from Ester Barker, high school Sunday school teacher would like to have audio/visual capabilities in her classroom. He also requested that Sunday school classrooms and the nursery be updated with own tv monitors. Greg Tholken presented to the board his findings of a/v equipment costs. 32″ television pkg. will cost approximately $385; and a 42″ television pkg. will cost approximately $565.72. The board voted to purchase the 42″ television pkg. for the Sunday school classrooms, using Sunday school funds. Bro. Tom will check with each of the Sunday school teachers regarding their audio/visual needs. Bro. Tom made a motion to purchase the aforementioned approved a/v package for the necessary classrooms, with a second by Marcia Bibb, followed by a unanimous vote.

Bro. Tom also mentioned that during his recent conference held at Lake Junaluska in North Carolina, he attended a workshop on worship, the speaker highly recommended that churches purchase an “All Access Pass” from Shiftworship.com for use during their worship services. The All Access Pass costs $149/year which includes unlimited downloads of 3,000+ backgrounds, mini movies, message screens and more with new content weekly. Tom made a motion to purchase the All Access Pass for $149/year, Becky Tholken seconded the motion, followed by a unanimous vote.

Sisters in Christ- meets on Monday, March 11 at 6 PM

UMM- Chapel Hill’s Methodist Men’s group will host the Valley Methodist Men’s group on April 20. A SVEC utility bill has been received for the pavilion. It has been recommended that the church’s general fund pay for the electric bill for the pavilion beginning in April. Methodist Men’s group will pay the electric bill in March.

New building- Annette Brown has been gathering information regarding the needs for the kitchen. She estimates that to furnish the kitchen with the necessary equipment will cost approximately $10-12,000. Worship committee is continuing to gather info for audio/visual, stage, seating and divider curtains.

Bro. Tom mentioned that to purchase “top notch” everything will cost approximately $40K. Greg Tholken reviewed the quote received from Broadway Sound for audio/visual needs for holding worship services in the family life center. He believes that we can omit some items from the quote and change other items to reduce our costs from $12K to around $8K. It was recommended by the board that we find and purchase locking-stackable chairs, it was suggested that maybe we could find a possible selection and purchase about 100 for use.

Family Life
Center Progress

We have been very busy at the Family Life Center. We will continue to paint and do some clean-up work at the Family Life Center on Saturday mornings at 8 AM. Tile has been laid and grouted in the kitchen and storage room, tiling will resume in May in the hallway and bathrooms. We have received a Construction Progress Inspection Report. A few more items need to be completed to receive our Certificate of Occupancy. The Family Life Center Worship committee continues to explore the costs of equipment needed to hold worship services.

Next month we will post pictures of our Consecration service of the Family Life Center with our District Superintendent, Rev. Mike Hubble

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

As I write this I am still rejoicing over our Revival Services last month. It was such a wonderful time of Spiritual renewal. It’s my prayer that the spirit of revival will continue to grow in our church as we move forward in ministry together. All of us were reminded of just how in control God is and just how much we need to depend on Him.

As we begin March, we realize how quickly this year is moving. Keeping that in mind, we want to take advantage of every second we have. March 10, daylight savings time begins and we spring forward one hour. We get one extra hour of day light. I will be the first to admit I love that extra hour of day light. Keeping that extra hour of daylight in mind, I would like to challenge you to do something special with it. This year from the start of daylight savings time until it ends, I want to challenge you to use that extra hour to do something for Jesus. It can be volunteering at many of the ministry centers in town. You could give an hours’ time working with one of the ministries at church. You can decide what to do with it. Sixty minutes a day can make a difference in your life and in the lives of many others… Like the fish and loaves Jesus can take an hour and multiply it into many more. Be a difference maker, it only takes an hour.

Our God is so awesome, I am so glad to be serving Him with you at Chapel Hill. Remember, use that hour wisely and I will see you in church this Sunday.

Hello there!
Wow! The first two months of 2013 are now behind us! We held Revival Services February 10-13 with featured guest speaker, Rev. Joe Green. Joe brought along his wife Beth, who led our worship during the evening service on Sunday. We shared a fellowship meal with them following our Sunday morning worship. We had wonderful special music and also personal testimonies from Marcia Bibb, Michael Griffith, Chandra Cribbs, Stephanie Allen & Sharon Cordell during each service. Hope you were able to attend at least one of the Revival Services, they will be available on the website during the month of March. Until next month, Becky

On Sunday, January 27, Jeff Jones was honored as our February’s “Servant of the Month” during our morning worship service. Jeff is the Finance chairperson of Chapel Hill, he also serves as an usher. Thank you Jeff for your commitment and service to Chapel Hill and your church family

Congratulations to Jordan and Noelle (Tholken) Emick on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Jaylin Alexandra Emick. Jaylin was born on Friday, February 1 at 1:03 pm in Sarasota, Florida. She weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz. and measured 20 inches long. Noelle is the daughter of Greg & Becky Tholken, Jaylin is the Tholken’s first grandchild.

Congratulations to Matthew & Hilarie Anderson on the birth of their beautiful daughter, McKenzie Rae Anderson. McKenzie was born on Tuesday, February 5 at 6:01 pm. She weighed 6 lbs, 15 oz. and measured 19 1/4 inches long. Matthew is the son of Billy & Pam Anderson, McKenzie is the Anderson’s first grandchild.

Griffith Elementary School recently held their annual spelling bee for students in grades second through fourth. We would like to congratulate Grace Mitchell for placing 2nd place for second grade and Chloe Griffith who placed 3rd place for third grade. Grace is the daughterof Dusty & Jennifer Mitchell, and Chloe is the daughter of Michael & Lynna Griffith. Congratulations girls!

This local organization provides counseling, education, pregnancy testing and financial support to women. EASTER EGG HUNT

The Board meeting minutes of January 27 were reviewed by board members. Paul Powell made a motion to accept minutes as written, Jeff Jones seconded the motion, with a unanimous vote following.

Jeff Jones of the Finance committee distributed the financial reports for January 2013. The financial report displayed total inflows of $17,425.94 and total outflows of $18,422.00 which brought the net total for January to ($996.06), with a total balance of $72,138.35. He then distributed the Building Fund report, which displayed better figures of total inflows of $1,320,253.33 and total outflows of $1,308,587.79 resulting in a net total of $11,665.54 The total spent on building to date (2/17/13) $1,308,587.54; Balance need to finish building (GenTech) $47,055.89; Bank loan balance $850,000; and building cash fund balance of $11,665.54. Utility bills will start to be drawn from the general fund account for the Family Life Center (FLC) paid by general fund treasurer Sharon Cordell. Ethel Powell made a motion to accept financial report, followed by a second by Greg Tholken; a unanimous vote followed.

Glenn Barker of the building committee reported that the painting will continue on Monday evenings at 5 PM and Saturday mornings at 8 AM.

Sarai Pierce of the SPR committee reported that the staff evaluations have begun and will continue after Bro. Tucker returns from his continuing ed. at Lake Junaluska, N.C. Currently, we are waiting the appointments for 2013. Sarai also reported for the high school youth that their 2013 mission project will be “No More Malaria” and the budget is $2,000. Annette Brown is awaiting bids on laying tile in the Kitchen & storage room at the Family Life Center. approximate size of area is 520 sq. ft. Harold Bibb offered to lay the tile in kitchen & storage room, offer was accepted, Harold will lay the tile.

New Business: Marcia Bibb reported that she received a phone call message from a United Health Care rep. wanting to hold a Bingo night at our church. The rep. stated that she wanted to give a 45 min. presentation to sell health care coverage, than play bingo for 45 min. The board declined the opportunity with a unanimous vote.

Becky Tholken recommended that we renew our advertisement in the Chamber of Commerce booklet for $350. The contract needs to be signed. The board approved the advertisement, Jeff Jones to sign contract & return it to Becky to email to Chamber rep.

Glenn Barker asked if Harold would be willing to also lay the tile in the bathrooms, He graciously said yes he would.

Ethel Powell expressed her appreciation of youth participation in the morning worship service today. Logan Wells, son of Mindie Bach played his guitar and sang “Long Black Train”. Looking to have a total youth service soon.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

All I can say is welcome to 2013. If you’re reading this, it means the Mayan calendar did not mean a whole lot. I guess Jesus will come when He is ready to come and not before. Since the world has not ended that means we have a lot to do as a church. I want to challenge you to do several things in this New year.

First, I want to ask you to serve Christ faithfully. We do not know what the next twelve months holds for us, but God does. The only way to navigate through all the challenges this New year will have is by faith. A strong unwavering faith in the One who does know what is waiting ahead. I always look at the beginning of a new year as an adventure. An adventure shared with the Lord who will lead us forward. In 2013, faith holds the key. We must believe and trust in Jesus.

Second, I hope you are prepared to express you faith by serving in the church. This year I want to encourage everyone to be involved. The leadership of our church will make every effort to give you opportunities to serve. If you don’t know where or how to do it, come see me and I will help you. Pray for direction and God will show you what He wants you to do. If we all are serving together, there is nothing we can’t do with the Lord’s help.

A New year filled with new opportunities to accomplish great things with the Lord. I look forward to seeing what God has in store for us. I will see you in church this Sunday! Have a blessed New Year!

Happy New Year!

Wow! We have now said good-bye to 2012 and hello to 2013! What a wonderful and busy year 2012 was at Chapel Hill. We began construction on our Family Life Center, we had a youth rally called Reborn during the week of record breaking heat, and also Sequatchie Volunteers in Medicine opened their doors to the uninsured residents of Sequatchie County. We should be able to move into the Family Life Center very soon.

On Sunday, November 25, Annette Brown was honored as our December “Servant of the Month”. Annette can be found singing in our church’s choir and also as one of our Sisters in Christ members. Annette will be the new Work Area Committee Chairperson in 2013. Thank you so much Annette for all you do for your church family and for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Our choir presented their 2012 Christmas Cantata on Sunday, December 9 during our Morning Worship Service. We were blessed with a solo by Margie Clemmer and a trio by Savannah, Shannon & Tanner Land. The videos of the cantata will be viewable on our website this month. Sunday, December 9 & 16 we welcomed a total of 11 new members to our congregation. On December 9, Tracey Jackson, Dwayne Turner, Miriam Gibson, Rebecca Turner, Sydney Durham, Tom Cannon, Gloria Cannon, Bret Hendon & Grace Hendon joined Chapel Hill UMC. The following Sunday, December 16, Steven & Angela Hanschen joined the church. We welcome all our new members of 2012.

It’s our great pleasure to announce our January 2013 “Servant of the Month”, Lynna Griffith. Lynna serves the children of Chapel Hill as she shares the gospel of Jesus to them during Children’s Church. She is a member of Mrs. Ethel’s Sunday school class and she also helps in the serving line every October during the annual BBQ, she also serves as a member of the Staff-Parish Relations committee, she helps those employed by the church to grow in their ability to serve and be effective. Administrative Board Meeting
December 9, 2012

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, December 9 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Glenn & Patsy Barker, Keith Davis, Sarai Pierce, Harold & Marcia Bibb, Rev. Tom Tucker, Janis Spangler, Jeff Jones, Annette Brown, Greg & Becky Tholken, Betty Austin, Ethel and Paul Powell

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker who also opened the meeting with prayer.

Administrative Board Meeting minutes of November 11 were distributed. Rev. Tom made a motion to accept the minutes as written, with a second by Greg. A unanimous vote followed to accept the minutes as written.

Financial Report: Jeff Jones distributed the November Financial Report. The November 30 fund general balance of: $57,866.21 with a net total of $1,151.12. As of 12/9/12, we need to receive about $6,000/week in the next 3 weeks to meet the budget for 2012. Building fund checking balance as of YTD is $14,121.88. November Building totals: Spent on Building to date (12/8/12): $1,177,900; Balance needed to finish building: $140,751 (GenTech by contract); Bank Loan balance: $750,000. The financial report was approved by the Board.

Staff/Parish Relations: The SPR committee will meet on 12/17, to create a staff evaluation tool or rubric will be the focus of the meeting, it will assist the committee to evaluate each paid staff member, it will be a reflection on their strengths and area of need of improvement. Bro. Tom will meet with the District Superintendent for possible re-appointment on 12/11/12

Play

The children and middle school youth performed their annual Christmas play on Sunday, December 16 at 6:00 PM. The play was entitled “Dude, You Hear What I Hear?” It’s a story of a young shy girl named Taylor who was accidently locked in a department store overnight while playing hide-and-seek with her fellow Christmas campers, when she encountered some mannequins that came to life after the store closed. The silent alarm was activated by movement within, the police were called to the scene to investigate what they believed to be a “robbery”. However, it was just Taylor and the mannequins gathering items to create a nativity scene that had been removed from the store because it had offended people. The true spirit of Christmas was once again displayed at the Forest Creek Mondo Mart.

As we enter this special season of celebration, let me take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas from Joan and me. We feel very thankful that the Lord has allowed us the privilege of being part of the Chapel Hill family for the past eleven years. May the Lord bless you as we celebrate together the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This truly is a season of great joy! To think God would be born into this world as a small child only to suffer and die for our sins is more than we can comprehend. Yet the story of Christmas tells us just that. Throughout this month, we will spend our time together reflecting on the true meaning of this special season. We will do that in worship, Sunday school class parties and in many other ways. There are several dates you may want to put on your calendar. Our Christmas cantata will be on Sunday, December 9 during the morning service. You will not want to miss that. Another big event will be our children’s program scheduled for the evening of Sunday, December 16. The kids have really been working hard on this program and it’s going to be wonderful! Two other events you need to know about are Christmas caroling on Wednesday, December 19, and our Communion Service on Christmas Eve from 5:00-6:30 PM. This service is a come and go at your convenience. Once again, may God bless you all during this holiday season. Celebrate Jesus and His love for you and always keep Him first. Last month the high school youth packed 19 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child! They had a fun time shopping for little trinkets and then packing the boxes! They also had a very successful spaghetti lunch on Nov. 11, and brought in over $1300 which more than paid for their cabin for Resurrection. The middle school youth will be hosting a Soup and Sandwich supper on Wednesday, Dec. 5 following the Wednesday night Bible study and youth programs. This fundraiser is to help them with their trip to Gatlinburg in January for Resurrection 2013. Please come out and show them your support as you did with the high school youth.

These disbursements will qualify Chapel Hill as a Five-Star Missions Church. We will be recognized for this at our Annual Holston Conference in June 2013. We also have sent to the Chattanooga District $150 for Camp Lookout and $150 for the Bethlehem Center. Our largest disbursement of $1,000 has been sent to the Lamons, in Honduras, for the hospital they are building there. We packed 19 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This year we involved the youth in shopping and packing the boxes. They did a wonderful job. Thank you for all your help and support for Missions this year!

This is the last Missions report I will be filing as your Missions Chairperson. I wish to say a special THANK YOU to all of you who have given your wonderful support during my tenure as chairperson since 1997, which has enabled our Missions efforts to expand significantly. Merry Christmas!

Wow! Another year is almost gone. December is a wonderful month because we have the privilege of celebrating the greatest gift ever given…when God gave us His one and only Son Jesus, to be our Savior. December will be another busy month at Chapel Hill. The choir will present their Christmas cantata during the morning service on December 9 at 10 AM, the children and middle school youth will perform their annual Christmas pageant during the evening service on December 16 at 5 PM, and we will also go Christmas Caroling on Wednesday, December 19 at 5. Then of course, we will have our traditional Christmas Eve Communion Service in which you can come and partake in communion anytime between 5 and 6:30. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

On Sunday, October 28, Sharon Cordell was honored as our November “Servant of the Month”. Sharon can be found among our Bell choir ringers and also as one of our Sisters in Christ members. Sharon also puts in a lot of time as the church treasurer. Thank you so much Sharon for all you do for your church family and for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Tuesday, December 25 we will celebrate Christmas Day. Church offices will be closed for the day, in order that the day may be spent with family to celebrate God’s greatest gift to His children…Jesus.

Church offices will also be closed on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.

We will be collecting baby gifts for Noelle (Tholken) & Jordan Emick as they welcome their daughter, Jaylin Alexandra into their family in January. Please place your gifts in the baskets provided at each of the entrances. Becky will be going to welcome her first grandchild and will be taking the gifts with her. Servant of the Month

It’s our great pleasure to announce the “Servant of the Month” of December 2012 to be Annette Brown. She is a member of Sister’s in Christ, Chapel Hill choir, the Administrative Board, and beginning in January, she will be serving as the Work Area chairperson, she has also served as a worship chairperson, leader of Discipleship and also as the leader of Outreach. Annette heads up the “Hanging of the Greens” every year. She serves Wednesday night refreshments and she also gives the children’s sermon regularly. Annette is a long time member of Chapel Hill and provides delicious food for our covered dish dinners here at church and helps out with our annual BBQs by setting up the serving line area each October. November 11, 2012

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, November 11 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Glenn & Patsy Barker, Jim & Anne Ellis, Betty Austin, Jeff Jones, Janis Spangler, Greg & Becky Tholken, Mark Allen, Keith Davis, Paul & Ethel Powell and Harold & Marcia Bibb

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker who also opened the meeting with prayer.

Administrative Board Meeting minutes of October 7 were distributed. Greg Tholken made a motion to accept the minutes as written, with a second by Patsy Barker. A unanimous vote followed to accept the minutes as written.

Financial Report: Jeff Jones distributed the October Financial Report. The October 31 fund general balance of: $56,715.04 with a net total of -$710.72. Building fund checking balance as of YTD is $129,375.30 October payments to be paid are as follows: GenTech Construction $128,342.83; City Electric $9,874.30; Dunlap Stone $3,951.00 and $760.08; Bledsoe Telephone $59.73; Sequachee Valley Electric Coop. $90.00. $7,200 was received on Nov. 11 for the building fund. Currently we are -$9,118 below budget YTD. Jeff Jones made a motion to accept the financial statement as printed, with a second by Greg Tholken, followed by a unanimous vote.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

As always, when I write my article for the newsletter in November, my mind and heart turn towards “Thanksgiving”. What better to reflect upon than the unending blessing and joy God brings us every day of the year. I believe it is a wonderful thing for us to give thanks to the Lord for all He has done and continues to do for His children. Our Nation is especially blessed by the Lord with abundance. We lack for nothing in America. It’s my hope we never take for granted how fortunate we are to live here. With great blessing also comes great responsibility as well, “To whom much is given, much is required”, certainly pertains to each and every one of us. It’s important as a nation we help not just our own, but others around the world that have great need.

As Christians, we must pray for our nation and its leaders. It’s vital we keep our precious nation close to God. We are His presence and His voice in this world. As the church, we must be bold in everything we do to remind America who God is and that we belong to Him. We must lead the way in giving thanks to God for who we are and what we have. If the church does not do it, who will? I believe that’s what being a good American means.

I hope November is a great month for our church and every member in it. I challenge you to pray every day that God will be glorified for all He has done and that our country will always be “One nation under God”. Have a happy Thanksgiving and I will see you in church Sunday.

to them. That day will also be “Old Fashion Sunday”. Please plan to stay after the morning
worship for our covered dish fellowship meal.

Please keep the 2012 Presidential Election in your prayers. This is a very important election for our
country. The entire economic future is tied up in this election. No matter what your belief system is,
you must exercise your God-given right as an American citizen and vote your conviction. It is the
one opportunity you have to make a change in your government. Election Day 2012 will take place
on Tuesday, November 6. Please get out and vote! Please help someone else get to the poles.

Sunday, November 11, the high school youth will prepare a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for their
lodging expenses when they attend “Resurrection 2013″ in Gatlinburg in January. Please stay after to
show your support our youth.

Sunday, November 18 at 6 PM, the Sequatchie County Fellowship of Churches will hold their Community
Thanksgiving Service at Covenant Fellowship Center located at 275 Walnut Street in downtown Dunlap.
Please come out to worship with your community and give thanks for all the Lord has blessed you with.

Hey There!

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year, especially here in the valley! What a fun filled month we had in October, with the 29th annual men’s BBQ as well as the hay ride. This month we will vote for our next President, celebrate the opening of Sequatchie Volunteers in Medicine, celebrate Thanksgiving, and prepare for the Christmas season. Rehearsals for the children’s Christmas pageant have begun as well as the choir rehearsals for their Christmas cantata. It seems as though once November arrives, the days pass by even more quickly than before. I guess it’s just because we are busier this time of year than any other time. I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

On Sunday, September 30, Fran McCain was honored as our October “Servant of the Month”. Fran is well
known for her delicious cakes that she bakes for our bake sales and her beautiful altar flower arrangements.
Thank you so much Fran McCain for all you do for your church family and our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.

Thursday, November 22 we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Church offices will be closed for the day, in
order that the day may be spent with family to give thanks to God for the blessings he has bestowed upon
us.

Sunday, November 25 at 5 PM, we will have our annual “Hanging of the Greens” to decorate the sanctuary
for Christmas. We will have refreshments afterwards in the fellowship hall. Please come out to enjoy the fun
and fellowship on Nov. 25 @ 5.

As in years past, Sisters in Christ will be selling pecans again this year for your holiday baking. Please watch

SEQUATCHIE VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE, INC.

SVIM has qualified 12 new patients to be seen on our opening day of Sunday, November 18. What an exciting
day it will be for those who have worked so hard in preparing for this clinic. God has blessed us very much in
this endeavor and I know that He will continue to do so. A special thanks to Karen Miller for all her hard work
credentialing our first medical volunteers, also to the Board of Directors for all their time and energy, our
screening committee, and to Pastor Tom Tucker & Dr. Hiltrud Thurmann for their vision of providing a free
clinic to those in our community that currently have no health insurance.

FOOD BANK

Our annual Thanksgiving Baskets has already begun! We are collecting money as well as Thanksgiving related food items. The Girl Scouts of our valley will be providing a donation box for our designated food items.

In addition to our food donation, we are asking for prepared pumpkin pies. The Girl Scouts baked 100 pies last year and we’d like to at least double that amount. We hope to provide 300 families with a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. The number of families being served every month is still very high. At present, we served over 900 people, 366 of that number were children. Please reach into your heart and help out our community neighbors in need. Thank you in God’s service, Fran Chapman 364-7530

We wish to thank everyone for your support of our baked goods and crafts sale at our annual barbeque on Saturday, October 20. We raised $2,237 for missions. These funds will be used to help support our various mission goals during year 2013. Thanks again for your support.

2013 Budget was presented to the Board, correction to be made to 4.1. Instead of the $18,000 that was shown on the 2013 10% of Offerings, it should read $19,400. Greg Tholken made a motion to accept the 2013 budget at $194,288, with a second by Paul Powell, followed by a unanimous vote.

Annette Brown made a motion to give a 6 mo. trial evaluation of the Right Now Ministries leadership training program, with a second by Ethel Powell, followed by a unanimous vote.

Secretary: Becky Tholken: Nova Copy has a Digital Support Service that would cover a relocation of our copier equipment for only $10/month. Average cost of relocating the copier without this coverage would cost somewhere around $149/hour. She asked that the board review the information sheet she distributed for future voting. This program covers multiple services, however, the savings for moving the equipment to our new building when needed will more than pay for the plan.

The Family Life Center is really making great progress! The steel construction is now in place, with siding being installed as well. We are looking to move our Wednesday night activities to the new building as soon as possible. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to stop by and tour the construction site, please do so. Can you believe it’s already October! It seems as though time goes by so quickly. It’s been a great year for our church so far and October promises to be a great month as well. It certainly promises to be a busy one.

As you can tell, the Family Life Center is really looking good. If you have not walked through it, I encourage you to do so. It is going to allow us to do so much more in the way of ministry than we are able to do now. I do want to remind everyone that you should not neglect giving to the general fund of the church in order to give to the building fund. The building fund is over and above your regular offering. We are a little behind on our general fund and need to catch it up in order to meet our budget this year. I am sure you will give thought and prayer concerning your giving to both the general and building funds.

Let me just briefly mention some of the major events happening this month. There are three events I want to remind you of. First, on October 14, we will meet with our District Superintendent, Rev. Mike Hubble to conduct our annual charge conference. This is a time to celebrate the ministry and accomplishments of our church. Then on October 20, we will have our men’s BBQ and the mission crafts and bake sale. We will also have a blood drive at the church on that same day. The last thing I want to mention is our annual fall hayride at the Barker’s home. There will be lots of fun, food and fellowship. Please put October 28 on your calendar now so you will not miss this special day.

I told you October was going to be a busy month. It’s wonderful to be serving Christ at Chapel Hill. May the Lord bless you and I will see you in church Sunday.

Hey There!

The autumn months are upon us. I love this time of year as the trees begin to change colors. This month marks my 1 year anniversary as the Administrative Assistant/Secretary of Chapel Hill. The year has quickly passed by! What a blessing it has been to serve as the Son-shine newsletter editor as well. Here at Chapel Hill, we are continuing to see God at work in our church. Our senior high youth group is continually growing on Wednesday nights and our Family Life Center building project is making great progress also. We have a busy but exciting month here at the church with our 29th annual men’s BBQ and our much anticipated Chapel Hill hay ride held at the Glenn & Patsy Barker farm.

On Sunday, September 2, Paul Powell was acknowledged as our “Servant of the Month” for September 2012. With the absence of Pastor Tom & our Lay leader Barry Kimsey, Ethel Powell who gave the message also made the presentation to her husband Thank you Paul for serving the Lord and your church family.

Coming this month to Chapel Hill! The Methodist Men’s Group of Chapel Hill will hold their 29th annual Men’s BBQ. This is a much anticipated event at Chapel Hill. The Chapel Hill Missions also holds a Bake & Crafts Sale during the BBQ. Our final blood drive for Blood Assurance will also be held during the day. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, Oct. 20!

Another anticipated event at Chapel Hill is our annual hayride held at the farm of Glenn & Patsy Barker. This is a fun family event every year! We have a bonfire and cook hotdogs and serve up chili and other favorites of our church families. SEQUATCHIE VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE, INC.
SVIM will soon be opening their doors on Sunday, November 18, to provide free health care to members of our community that do not currently have medical insurance. If you are interested in helping in this new ministry, please call 785-7618. We are looking for prayer warriors, greeters, receptionists and medical personnel. We will be holding our clinic once a month on Sunday afternoons at the Dunlap Medical Center, located at 67 Cates Street.

Servant of the Month

It’s our great pleasure to announce our October “Servant of the Month” to be Fran McCain. She is better known by many as the “cake lady.” Fran has a talent for baking as many of you can attest to. Since coming to Chapel Hill, she has served Christ in many ways whether it’s providing food for special events, arranging and providing altar flowers or just sharing her friendly smile with whoever she meets. We are very fortunate to have Fran as a member of Chapel Hill. Fran, thank you for all you do for Christ. Pictured below is Fran with her husband, John who recently passed away. John was also a faithful servant of God. We celebrate both Fran and John.

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, September 9 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Glenn & Patsy Barker, Jeff Jones, Janis Spangler, Rev. Tom Tucker, Paul Powell, Ethel Powell, Anne Ellis, Annette Brown, Betty Austin and Greg & Becky Tholken

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker. Ethel Powell opened the meeting with prayer.

Financial Report: Jeff Jones distributed the August Financial Report. The August balance of: $54,166.38 with a net total of ($3,887.25). A Building Fund YTD financial report displaying a net total of $27,534.07 including the current days offering of $1,010.00. Our current loan total is $295,000. Loan balance will increase to $405,000 on Monday, September 10, 2012.

We have so much happening in our church, it’s hard to keep up with it all. I guess that’s a good thing especially when all the activity is centered around Jesus and His kingdom. It was a great summer and I am looking forward to a wonderful fall.

As you have noticed, the Family Life Center is really going up quickly. It won’t be long before it will be in full use. Please keep this huge undertaking in your prayers. We are trusting in God to enable us to completely pay for this new ministry center in five years or less. This is a much needed facility and will help us to reach out to our community in many new ways.

Another big event scheduled this month is “Friendship Sunday” which is September 30. We want everyone young and old to bring a friend to church. We will have a covered dish dinner after the morning service. Please try and bring an un-churched friend with you on that Sunday. Who Knows, your invitation may change that person’s life and would that not be something wonderful! Please put that date on your calendar. It should be a fun day at church.

It’s wonderful to be a Christian, especially in this day and time. As this year turns to another season, let’s really get busy growing God’s kingdom! Hope to see you in church this Sunday.

Hey There!

Summer is gone, vacations have ended and school has begun. We only have 4 months remaining of 2012. It seems like yesterday that we were welcoming a new millennium, and now we are into the second decade of this millennium. Where does the time go? We experienced a very busy and hot summer this year. In June, we held our annual Vacation Bible School and our first youth rally & concert on our new property. In July, we continued to watch the progress of our Family Life Center being built and in August, we settled down and began to prepare for our annual Charge Conference scheduled for October 14.

On Sunday, August 5, Barry Kimsey recognized one of our youth, Chandler Morrison with “Servant of the Month” for August. Chandler helped to orchestrate our “Reborn” youth concert and rally held at the new property on Saturday, June 30. Thank you Chandler for serving the Lord.

The Sequatchie County Fellowship of Churches Food Bank is looking for volunteers. We here at Chapel Hill are still responsible for having our food bank manned on Fridays. We are lacking volunteers at this time. Please contact Fran Chapman at 364-7530 to sign up to give your service to our needy in the community. Servant of the Month

We are excited to announce this months “Servant of the Month” to be Paul Powell. Paul is in the rotation as a Sunday School teacher of the Basement Bunch, is a member of the Methodist Men, serves as chairman of the Chapel Hill trustees and caretaker of the cemetery. Paul is also very instrumental in the organization of the Men’s annual BBQ. Paul helps with pulling the pork after it has been cooked for everyone to enjoy. Paul has been married to Ethel for 44 years, they have 2 children, Travis & Stacey and seven grandchildren. Paul is a longtime member of Chapel Hill, he and Ethel were youth directors back in 1974 until the early 1990′s. Paul also serves as one of the district county commissioners. Paul works for Ferrellgas. Paul likes to fish and hunt if time permits, he loves any bright and loud color. His favorite food is seafood and is a very tender-hearted person. Paul, your church would like to thank you for all you do.

Now that it is September, school has started, and summer is almost over, it is time to start planning for our annual Chapel Hill Barbeque on October 20. Chapel Hill Missions will once again hold the crafts and baked goods sale and we need your help. All you cooks, please furnish us with the usual pies, cakes and other baked goods that always sell so well and all you crafters, please furnish us with crafts to sell. Also, anyone who could volunteer to work during the sale, please contact Jane Indyk at 949-4034. The craft and bake sale will be held from 10 AM until 1 PM. Administrative Board Meeting
August 12, 2012

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, August 12 at 4:00 PM. The following members were in attendance: Glenn & Patsy Barker, Jeff Jones, Janis Spangler, Rev. Tom Tucker, Paul Powell, Annette Brown, Sharon Cordell and Greg & Becky Tholken

The meeting was called to order by chairman, Glenn Barker, Patsy Barker gave the opening prayer.

Administrative Board Meeting minutes of July 15 were distributed. Greg Tholken made a motion to accept the minutes as written, with a second by Paul Powell. A unanimous vote followed to accept the minutes as written.

Financial Report: Jeff Jones distributed the July Financial Report. The July balance of: $58,053.63 with a net total of $1,828.00. A Building Fund YTD financial report displaying a net total of $22,526.74 including the current days offering of $6,160.00. Our current loan total is $295,000.

Trustees: Paul Powell: awaiting tax exemption from Nashville

Nominations: Rev. Tom Tucker: the nominations committee is starting to meet in preparation for charge conference in October.

Worship Committee: Rev. Tom Tucker: June Haman is stepping down as the worship director due to Tom’s health but will remain on the committee, Shannon Land will temporarily become worship director at this time.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE, Rev. Tom Tucker

As we leave the month of July behind us and enter into August, we see summer slipping away. That means fall is not far away. In August, things seem to begin to return to normal with the start of school and vacation and travel come to an end.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are so faithful to our church. Who serve in so many ways which often times goes unnoticed, for your faithful attendance and for your genuine love of Christ which you share through your life. As your Pastor, I want you to know how thankful I am.

I would like to thank everyone who has given to our building program, or who recently pledged to give through our “Widows Mite Pledge Campaign.” Pledges are almost at $419,000. I know there are still pledges that will be turned in. It’s our goal to have our new “Family Life Center” paid off in five years if not sooner. We will be in the new ministry center by November-that’s exciting!

Let me close by telling you how proud I am of our youth and all they have accomplished. We should give thanks to God not only for our youth and children, but also for those who lead them. We are blessed more than you realize when it comes to this ministry. Please keep them in your prayers.

With five months left to go in 2012, I am looking for God to do great things with us and through us. Once again, thank you for being so faithful to the Lord.

Hey there!

Wow! Summer is about gone. What a scorching heat we experienced this summer, we hit the triple digits very early on. School will be starting again very soon. The summer months just fly by so very quickly every year. We had a very busy summer with VBS and our youth rally both happening in June. In July, Chapel Hill celebrated its 170th birthday, and of course our country celebrated its birthday as well. I look forward to a more settled down fall, with our annual Men’s BBQ, Missions Bake & Craft Sale and Blood Drive in October and the anticipated hayride at the Barker farm. I hope to see you at those upcoming Chapel Hill events.

On Sunday, June 24, a very surprised Mindie Bach was recognized as “Servant of the Month” for July. Mindie was the driving force behind this year’s Vacation Bible School and she did an excellent job as a rookie coordinator. Thank you Mindie for all you do for your church family.

Sunday, July 1, the Sequatchie County Fellowship of Churches held their annual 4th of July community service at Ewtonville Baptist Church. Pastor Tom shared Psalm 33:12-22 with the congregation. We celebrated the birthday of our great nation with prayer, scripture and patriotic songs sung by the community choir. One of their selections “A Salute to the Armed Services” honored the veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and the Marines. It was a wonderful time of worship and celebration

I failed to mention that we were having a blood drive for Blood Assurance in July. We typically hold 3 blood drives a year, the first one in May, the second in July, and our final drive in conjunction with our annual Men’s BBQ in October. I hope that you were able to come out and give the gift of life during one or all of the first two drives. We fell short of our goal during the May drive. During the July drive, Blood Assurance was holding a drawing for an iPad. They are in need of blood donations in the Tennessee Valley area. Please, if you are eligible to donate, come out and donate. Your 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 people.

On July 27, the 2012 Olympics began in London. Our prayers are with the athletes and their families as they compete in their designated events.

A special thank you goes to Martha Austin and her grandchildren for weeding and mulching here at the church. It looks great! Thank you again for your time and energy making our church beautiful.

Servant of the Month

We are excited to announce this month’s “Servant of the Month” to be one of our youth, Chandler Morrison. Chandler is the son of Doyle Morrison and Stacey & Keith Blevins, and grandson of Paul & Ethel Powell. He has three brothers, Wyatt and Spencer Blevins and Cana Morrison. Chandler has been attending Chapel Hill his entire life. He is a very active member of our high school Sunday school and youth group. He was intrumental in beginning the plans for the youth concert, contacting speakers and bands for the event. He worked on the committee with Ms. Sarai and Bro. Tom completing the plans. He enjoys working with computers and helping Dennis Carbaugh with the audio visual when Greg and Becky need to be away from church. He has helped with VBS taking pictures of events for presenting at the program at the end of Bible school. He will b a junior at SCHS and is a member of the SCHS football team for the first time this year. He also assists with the sound system at the high school. Chandler, your church would like to thank you for all you do.

Mission News for August 2012

The missions of Chapel Hill in conjunction with VBS, helped to raise enough money to purchase about 50 mosquito nets for children in Mali, Africa to protect them from developing malaria from mosquito bites.

First, check out the mission bulletin board in the basement for SOUTH SUDAN MISSION OPPORTUNITIES.

During July, we collected formula and diapers for the Women’s Care Center, and they have made one more request for help. They have asked that any time during the year, our women who can knit, crochet or quilt make a baby blanket or quilt for the newborn layettes they provide to new mothers. Anyone making a blanket or quilt, call Jane Indyk or Davis.

Since it is August, it is once again time for our Shoes for Orphan Souls campaign. For August 1 through Sunday, Sept. 2, please bring new shoes, socks and shoelaces in sizes school age children would wear to Chapel Hill in support of this annual drive by Christian radio station WMBW and Buckner Ministries.

The Administrative Board of Chapel Hill UMC met on Sunday, July 15 at 4:00 PM. Financial Report: Jeff Jones distributed the May & June Financial Reports. The May 31 balance of: $55,528.00 with a net total of -$4,399.90. June 30 balance is $56,225.63 with a net total of $697.63. He also handed out a Building Fund YTD financial report displaying a net total of $10,967.75 as of July 15, 2012.

New Building: Glenn Barker distributed a billing worksheet on the current construction of the Family Life Center. The current balance to finish project is $829,768.86. The second hand-out consisted of a sketch showing location of the proposed retaining wall with current top of wall elevation of 774.8 which would be 5 5/8″ higher than mezzanine floor elevation of 774.33 & would be of no use in future building plans & would have to be concrete sawed off and removed in future. Glenn Barker suggested that the retaining wall be revised to accommodate future additions to the Family Life Center. Harold Bibb made a motion to accept the revision of the retaining wall with a second by Paul Powell followed by a unanimous vote.

Sarai Carbaugh for staff/parish relations: no report

Sarai for Reborn concert: total cost of concert $13,000. The only outstanding bill due is for the portable restroom facilities.

Plans for Resurrection 2013 are currently being organized. Sarai to attend with the high school youth, and Melissa Cordell to take the middle school youth.
